Congratulations to Network Ten on V8 Supercar Victory
27/4/2004 2:57 (Press Release) -
Australian Vee Eight Supercar Company (AVESCO) Chairman Tony Cochrane has congratulated Network Ten on beating all comers to win the Silver Logie for its’ coverage of the Bob Jane T-Marts 1000 at Bathurst.
Network Ten won the Silver Logie for Most Outstanding Sports Coverage ahead of events including the Rugby World Cup, Australian Grand Prix, Test cricket, Friday night football (AFL) and rugby league’s State of Origin Series.
“This again shows that the V8 Supercar Championship Series is fast approaching the likes of football and cricket in terms of general appeal and popularity,” Mr Cochrane said.
“With Network Ten’s outstanding coverage and support, which this Silver Logie recognises, our sport is at the elite level in this country and around the world.
“Just as we do in the championship, Network Ten takes its’ superb coverage to new heights each year providing viewers with the most comprehensive, armchair ride … all live to air.
“In China alone, CCTV increases our international television audience to 70 countries and into more than 500 million homes.”
V8 Supercar racing is the third most watched sport in Australia and fast approaching rugby league in terms of public popularity.
An AC Nielsen report has shown that the V8 Supercar Championship Series has grown in appeal. It shows that 19 per cent of the general population have an interest in V8 Supercar racing while rugby league is only slightly ahead in appeal at 23 per cent.
“These statistics are hot off the press,” Mr Cochrane said.
“We have a draft report from AC Nielsen with some data that will surprise many people. It proves that V8 Supercar racing is very much a mainstream sport and appeals to just as many people.
“AVESCO will be releasing this data in the coming weeks.”
AVESCO has also just agreed to a five-year deal to race in Shanghai at the Shanghai International Circuit from next year. There are plans well in train for further expansion into the overseas markets.
The V8 Supercars are headed to New Zealand next week for the Placemakers NZ V8 International at the Pukekohe circuit. The race will consist of qualifying, a Top 10 Shootout and three races.
