Bathurst 1000: Top Ten Shootout

9/10/2004 17:15 (Mark Jones) - Steven Richards has taken pole position by the smallest margin in the history of the top ten shoot out. Just one thousandth of a second separates the Castrol Commodore from Jason Bright.

Steven Richards scorched around the 6.213 rural New South Wales circuit in a lap time of 2:07.9611 to take his first ever pole position at Mount Panorama. Next car out on the track was Jason Bright and the PWR Performance Products Commodore recorded a 2:07.9623.

It was a real red letter day for Castrol Perkins Racing team as Paul Dumbrell stunned the V8Supercar establishment, setting a 2:08.0360 lap time which stood for more than half the top ten shootout.

Defending pole winner, and last man out Greg Murphy was just off the pace at 2:08.1177 in the K-Mart Commodore.

Quickest of the Ford drivers was first man out Marcos Ambrose who set a time for the others to chase only to be usurped by next man out Dumbrell. Ambrose ended the session fifth.

Ambrose team mate Russell Ingall had a moment in the Chase, replicating the start of co-driver Cameron McLean's accident from Friday morning. Ingall ended up eighth quickest.

Craig Lowndes also had a moment at the Chase after hitting the ripple strip on the inside of the Chase's left hander, leaving the left side of the car airborne long enough the Lowndes couldn't turn enough to stay on the track. Lowndes ended ninth, ahead of only Jason Bargwanna.
