HRT respond to Lowndes rumours/Bowe comments

21/8/2000 22:40 (Shane Rogers) - Holden Racing Team have made no comment regarding rumours that Craig Lowndes may not be driving for them next year when contacted by the V8Supercar Pick 10 today.

Paul Weissel, Media Manager for HRT said: "...when its contract renewal time, there are always rumours flying around," in response to what has become possibly the biggest rumour in the history of the V8Supercar category.

Weissel added: "Craig is contracted to HRT until December 31 this year and once negotiations are finalised, HRT will issue a relevant release."

Rumours have been circling about the future of the most successful driver in V8Supercar for the last two months, and have intensified in the last two weeks.

HRT also defended the actions of Jeff Grech following the accident involving young lion Todd Kelly and CAT Falcon driver John Bowe following race one at Calder on Sunday.

Bowe said that he "found the behaviour of… Grech, like an excited father at a mini-league game - plenty of abuse." and that he "really would have expected better from the category's leading team."

Bowe was found guilty of causing the accident, which sent Kelly spearing off the road. Bowe was then relegated to the rear of the grid for race two.

Weissel emphasised the seriousness of the accident, stating that "The incident had the potential to have had a similar outcome to last year's crash involving Craig Lowndes."

"HRT is very protective of its drivers and very concerned should an older, more experienced person appear to run its youngest driver off the circuit." He also said that in such cases "HRT is more than willing to support its people."
