Bowe Gets Ultimate Birthday Present

19/4/2005 13:47 (Press Release) - Team BOC’s John Bowe could be excused of saying that all of his birthdays have come at once. A victim of a brazen act of theft on Thursday, when all of his team gear was stolen from his car at a Auckland Hotel, Bowe received a call from his wife Alice late yesterday afternoon with the news that the equipment had been returned. The perfect present to celebrate his birthday today.

Although some minor items were missing, all of the major pieces that Bowe needed to race this weekend, at the New Zealand round of the 2005 V8 Supercar Championship, including his racing suits, HANS device and helmet, were handed back to the reception of the Carlton Auckland Hotel.

“All I can say is thank you to the person that had the courage to return my gear. It really is the best birthday present that I could have got,” said Bowe.

“I’ve pretty much received everything back, albeit a little dirty. The only things missing are items that don’t have my name on it.”

“Apparently my kit bag just turned up at reception sometime late yesterday afternoon. It’s great to see that whoever did this in the first place does have some honour and honesty inside them.”

After making an emotional appeal through the New Zealand media on Thursday morning, Bowe has been overwhelmed with the response from the New Zealand community.

“I cannot describe how appreciative I am of the support I received from the [New Zealand] media and the reaction from not just the people of Auckland but the entire country has been remarkable. I definitely wouldn’t have received my gear back without the enormous help,” Bowe said further.

“I would especially like to thank Nikki Pye from Stix who has been an instrumental force over the past two days,” Bowe concluded.

In qualifying today, Bowe struggled with car set up managing only a time of 0:56:02, placing him in 18th position after the exclusive of Garth Tander. Fellow Team BOC driver, Brad Jones will start this afternoon’s race from 22nd position. Both drivers will be looking for a better performance in race one.
