SBR CARS IN TOP FIVE AT NEW ZEALAND

19/4/2005 13:57 (Press Release) - In a gutsy team display by the Stone Brothers Racing outfit, both Russell Ingall and Marcos Ambrose managed to secure positions within the top five of race one at the Placemakers V8 International in Pukekohe, New Zealand this afternoon.

A best ever podium finish for Ingall over the Tasman was the major highlight as he grafted his Caltex Racing Falcon from fifth on the grid to complete a drama charged 36-lap race in second position.

Some minor adjustments to the vehicle’s set-up overnight managed to have his car in great shape as the Gold Coast driver followed on from an impressive third place in qualifying to elevate himself up the order.

“Our race strategy was to pit early and because of the durability of the Caltex Racing Falcon we were able to soldier on and record an encouraging result for the team.

“After this morning’s qualifying we knew we had a strong car and it certainly didn’t let us down as we managed some consistent times.

“We’re now at the business end of this race meeting and it’s certainly going to help starting from the front row for tomorrow’s second race.

Today marked the eleventh occasion in the past 15 rounds in which both SBR Falcons have featured in the top ten shootout.

Ambrose started from the front row of the grid and managed to steal the lead from pole sitter Craig Lowndes during the opening lap.

A coming together on turn two between the front-runners also allowing Ingall to jump a couple of spots.

Eight laps later contact was made between Steve Richards and the Pirtek Falcon as they duelled for the lead, however Ambrose recovered to finish fifth.

“This is a very fast, tight track and as can be seen by the many racing incidents today there was some very tough racing out there,” said Ambrose.

“Right from the outset we knew we had to shoot for the lead and these things can sometimes happen.

“When Steve Richards tried to pass there just wasn’t enough room and it cost us both so as a team we’re really going to have to push hard tomorrow.”

Ambrose will start from the very same grid position as Ingall did today and is confident he can emulate the powerhouse performance of his SBR team mate to ensure a better result in the two remaining races.
