FTR confirm Ambrose test, one of two candidates

13/10/2000 17:32 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) - Ford-Tickford Racing has confirmed open wheeler ace Marcos Ambrose as one of two candidates for the vacant 2001 FTR seat.

Ambrose will test a FTR Falcon sometime in the next fortnight with the hope of securing the full-time drive for next season. The second candidate is yet to be named.

Team Principal, Glenn Seton recently culled a short-list of possible drivers from four to two, one of which is Ambrose, and will evaluate both in a series of tests in the coming weeks before making an announcement.

The seat became available after Ford-Tickford foundation driver Neil Crompton declared he would leave the team at season’s end.

Ambrose has little tin-top experience, but his open wheeler exploits both here and overseas have many declaring him one of the most exciting up-and-coming drivers in the world. This year, he has mixed it amongst the world’s best in the French and British Formula 3 Championships.

Ambrose regularly rubbed wheels with current V8 star Garth Tander in the Australian Formula Ford series, and Formula One’s new whiz-kid Jenson Button in the British equivalent.

It is believed FTR’s Queensland 500 pilot Dean Canto is the other candidate. Craig Lowndes may also be under consideration after showing strong interest in a Ford mount.

An announcement is expected before Bathurst in early November.
