Next Lowndes to be unearthed in Portland
29/1/2001 23:39 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) - The sleepy seaside Victorian town of Portland will next month play host to Ford Australia’s search for the next Bright, Richards or Lowndes.
The fifth annual Portland Street Grand Prix will pit 400 of the best young karting enthusiasts against each other in the internationally renowned event.
Sponsored by Ford, the race is part of their increased commitment to unearth and develop the country’s best young talent on four wheels. Those who impress may find themselves come under the wing of Ford as part of their karting graduate program, and nurtured to become a future champion.
Ford Racing General Manager Howard Marsden highlighted the need for such an event.
"Kart racing is where our champions of the future will come from and it is important to us to have an involvement with these people from the very beginning, with events like Portland allowing these young drivers to demonstrate their ability to more than just a bunch of enthusiasts,” Marsden said.
Ford V8 charger Brad Jones will be an interested spectator on the weekend, bringing his support (and OzEmail Falcon) to the Portland event.
The Portland Kart Grand Prix will be held on a temporary 660-metre street course on February 10-11.
