No need for a 'Bradbury', say Canberra organisers

5/6/2002 13:22 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) - “This is one place where the Steven Bradbury theory works particularly well,” Craig Lowndes said of the cumbersome Canberra street circuit this week, but race organisers insist the last-man-standing approach won’t be needed this weekend.

Minor modifications have been made to the 3.9km street course – to the turn eight/nine complex (Holden Corner) and on State Circle – to create two more realistic passing opportunities.

Concrete barriers have been pushed back 50m and the road resurfaced at Holden Corner to encourage a late-braking move on the exit.

A 100m section of State Circle, the fastest part of the track, has also been resurfaced. This has seen a large bump under the Commonwealth Avenue Bridge removed, allowing a side-by-side braking duel in the run to turn 11.

Canberra 400 event manager, Neale Guthrie, said consultation with V8 Supercar drivers and analysis of television footage from last year’s race prompted the changes.

"We've looked carefully at what we can do and worked at some of the [driver] issues and I think this weekend we'll see the best racing yet," Guthrie told the Canberra Times.

The modifications are expected to reduce lap times on a dry track.
