Canto gets his chance; CAT uses another life

31/10/2002 19:00 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) - After sitting on the bench all season, former Konica V8 Supercar Series champion Dean Canto has been called into Briggs Motorsport’s run-on side for the penultimate round of the series at Pukekohe Park next week.

Canto, 22, will become the fourth driver to pilot the cursed Caterpillar-sponsored car since Simon Wills’ defection in August.

He replaces Dick Johnson Racing-contracted Greg Ritter, who was surprisingly selected ahead of Canto to represent the team at last week’s Indy carnival.

“Driving the Caterpillar car for the Briggs team will be a welcome challenge,” Canto said. “I’m thankful to John Briggs and the team for having faith in my ability.

“I’ve spent a lot of time in the pits, working on the cars. It’s allowed me to demonstrate my knowledge of the vehicles – I’m looking for anything that will give me the edge on the other drivers.”

At this stage, Canto’s stint doesn’t extend to the final round at Sandown Raceway.

The future of the CAT entry is uncertain. Rumours suggest the TWR Australia racing empire is attempting to pouch the Caterpillar sponsorship to run another car next year, but John Briggs insists his team will run at least three Falcons in 2003.
